How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter in the Desert?

Pool filter cartridges with blue end caps in a filter housing

Your filter is the part of the pool that does the quiet, constant work. When it is clean, the water stays clear with less chemical. When it is clogged, everything gets harder. Here is what desert pool owners should know.

Why filters clog faster here

Wind carries fine dust and sand into the water almost every day. Add sunscreen, body oils and leaves, and a cartridge filter fills up quickly, especially in summer when the pool is used the most and the pump runs longer.

A good rule of thumb

Most cartridge filters in the Coachella Valley do well with a thorough cleaning every three to four months, and sometimes more often during peak season. The best guide is your pressure gauge. When pressure rises about 8 to 10 PSI above the clean reading, it is time.

Signs your filter needs attention

  • Pressure gauge reading higher than normal
  • Weak flow from the return jets
  • Cloudy water even with good chemistry
  • Torn, flattened or discolored cartridge pleats

Clean or replace?

Cartridges do not last forever. If the pleats are torn, the end caps are cracked, or the cartridge never comes fully clean, replacing it is usually the better choice. A worn cartridge lets dirt pass right back into the pool.
